One of the most well-known players in Indian cricket and possibly the best batsman to ever represent India is Sunil Gavaskar. The fact that he played when there were no contemporary helmets for protection and plenty of deadly fast bowlers in international cricket likely sways the argument in his favour. Thirteen of his 34 Test centuries—the most ever—came against the West Indies, who at the time had one of the best fast bowling line-ups ever. Gavaskar scored a staggering 774 runs in four games during his first Test series against the West Indies in 1971, helping India to a historic 1-0 series victory.
As he twice scored four hundreds in a series against the Windies, he relished playing them. In Chennai, 1983, he also performed at his greatest Test score, 236 against the Caribbean country. Gavaskar, the first batter to accumulate 10,000 Test runs, participated in four World Cup tournaments, including India’s first World Cup title victory in 1983. Two years later, in Australia, he also led India to victory in the World Cricket Championship.
Gavaskar, who was primarily a Test player, did not perform well in ODIs. He struggled to duplicate his Test cricket accomplishments in the then-shortest version of the game after making his ODI debut in 1974. He received a lot of criticism for his innings of 36 not out in an absurd 174 deliveries, yet this is how he batted up until his penultimate ODI. In spite of having a high temperature, he scored the then-fastest World Cup hundred for an Indian against New Zealand. In addition, it was his only century in ODIs.
